Wow, last week was crazy! Jazz Standard celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Impulse! records with a 5-night bash called “Impulse! Nights.” It was 5 different groups curated by 5 different artists, playing music from the first 5 albums released on the label – under the producing wing of Creed Taylor (who was in attendance for the first night with Dave Liebman & Ravi Coltrane leading an all-star quintet through John Coltrane’s Africa/Brass album – it was astonishingly great, they really channeled the ghosts for that one!).
Here are some shots from the 2nd night, which was Roy Hargrove w/David Sanchez, George Cables, Dwayne Burno and Gregory Hutchinson playing Oliver Nelson’s The Blues and the Abstract Truth with such flamethrowing swing it had to be seen to be believed!
